On Tower Hill Memorial is the name of Chief Officer John Alexander Beauglass serving on S.S. Embassage (Newcastle upon Tyne) with the Merchant Navy who died 27/08/1941.

The son of Benjamin and Margaret Beauglass.

In Whitley Bay (Hartley South) Cemetery is a family headstone which reads:

In loving memory of
Benjamin Beauglass
Killed in action
1st July 1916 aged 41 years.

His dear wife Margaret
Died 25th Aug. 1950 aged 72 years.

And their son John Alexander
Lost at sea through enemy action
27th August 1941 aged 29 years.

Colin Boyd gives the following:

Chief Officer Beauglass was born at Murton. He lived at 10 Amble Avenue, Whitley Bay with his mother.

He was posted as missing presumed drowned when the S.S. “Embassage” owned by Hall Bros. Ltd. of Newcastle was torpedoed in the Atlantic Ocean by U Boat U-557 commanded by Korvettenkapitn Ottokar Arnold Paulssen. At 04.26 hours on the 27th August 1941 the Embassage (Master Edward Kiddie) in convoy OS-4 was torpedoed and sunk by U-557 about 100 miles west of Achill Island. The master, 32 crew members and six gunners were lost. Three crew members were picked up after four days by HMCS Assiniboine (I 18) (A/LtCdr J.H. Stubbs, RCN) and landed at Greenock.

The Master, 32 crew members and six gunners were lost.

The name of his father, Benjamin is recorded as Beuglass on Commonwealth War Graves and as Beuglas in Soldiers Died in the Great War, He is remembered as Ashington.

John Alexander Beauglass is remembered at Whitley Bay as “A. Beauglass” on W84.01 and in our List of Ships’ Crews.
