Every Name a Story

On Tower Hill Memorial is the name of Master John Charles Dockwrey, serving on S.S. Caithness with the Mercantile Marine who died 20/04/1917.

The British steamship Caithness was torpedoed and sunk by U Boat U-52, commanded by Kapitänleutnant Hans Walther, 130 miles NWxN of Cape Ortegal. Of her complement of 49, only 2 men survived.

His probate details give his address as Wright’s Farm, Catton, Allendale and his wife’s name as Frances Robertson Dockwrey

John Charles Dockwrey is remembered at Dunston Hill on D31.01, where his name is given as “Dockwray”, in the Mercantile Marine  Roll of Honour 1917 and in our List of Ships’ Crews.
