On the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France is the name of 20/730 Lance Corporal James Crawley, serving with the 20th (Tyneside Scottish) Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers who died 01/07/1916.

(Served as Cowie). The son of the late Edward Crawley and Harriet Cowie (formerly Crawley).

The true family name was Crawley. James was born at York Street, Wallsend, the son of Edward and Harriet Crawley  of 256 Yard Row, Bedlington, Northumberland. Following Edward’s death Harriet married a man called Cowie and James was known as James Cowie.

James Crawley is remembered in Bothal on B48.01 and B48.02 as Cowie.
