On Chatham Naval Memorial is the name of 165672 Able Seaman John Patterson serving on (RFR/CH/B/3697) H.M.S. “India” with the Royal Navy who died 08/08/1915.

The son of Samuel and Catharine Patterson. of Newcastle upon Tyne.

In St. Andrew’s and Jesmond Cemetery is a family headstone for Patterson, the top piece of which is missing.

It reads:
who died Sept. 21st 1916 aged 6?…

brother of George Patterson
who was lost at sea August 8th 1915
aged 40 years.

H.M.S. India was an Armed Merchant Cruiser of 7,940 tons which was sunk by submarine off the Norwegian coast.

His father Samuel lived at Hawthorn Inn, Forth Banks, Newcastle upon Tyne.
