On Chatham Naval Memorial is the name of 181767 Able Seaman John Shaw, serving on (RFR/CH/B/1519). H.M.S. Aboukir with the Royal Navy who died 22/09/1914.
The son of Albert and Matilda Shaw and the husband of Elizabeth Ann Shaw, of 138, St. Peter’s Road, Byker, Newcastle upon Tyne. He was a native of Louth, Lincs.
John was killed in the torpedoing of HMS Aboukir, ship number 108151, by U-Boat U-9, commanded by Kapitnleutnant Otto Weddigen on the 22nd September 1914.
John Shaw is remembered at Byker on B95.17 and in our List of Ships’ Crews.
