In Gosforth (St. Nicholas) Churchyard is the Commonwealth War Grave with a private headstone of Chief Engineer Officer Frederick Godtschailk, serving on S.S.. Fulham with the Merchant Navy who died 19/02/1941.

The headstone reads:-

In loving memory of
my dear husband
Frederick Oscar Godtschailk M.N.
Died through enemy action Feb 19th 1941
Aged 57 years

The husband of Gertrude Godtschailk, of Gosforth, Newcastle on Tyne.

Colin Boyd states that his address was 6 Woolveleigh Terrace, Gosforth. He was born in Gateshead.

The cargo ship SS Fulham II was a collier supplying the London power stations which struck a mine in the North Sea off the coast of the Tyne on 19th February 1941 and was beached. She was later refloated and towed to Jarrow, Northumberland.

Frederick Oscar Godtschailk is remembered at Westoe in W101.08 and in our List of Ships’ Crews.
