John Barry was the son of Patrick and Margaret Barry, of 124, Vine Street, Wallsend.

Susan Smith has sent in the following:

John’s grave stone is not accurate in that it omits the word Father. I will send in a separate email a copy of the original and intended inscription.

This error has caused my generation to wonder why our great grandfather (Patrick) is missing from the inscription. On speaking to John’s cousin this morning I can confirm that John was very ill and sent home to his family.

I am told that John arrived home with pneumonia and on arriving home he was placed into bed and died almost immediately.

CWGC have added the word father to the entry.

John Barry is remembered at Wallsend in W7.09 page 4, possibly in W7.19 page 29 and in our List of Ships’ Crews.
