On the Tower Hill Memorial is the name of 2nd Mate John Lawrence Hunter, serving on S.S. Lodaner with the Mercantile Marine  who died 14/04/1918.

The son of Robert Hunter, of 6, St. John’s Terrace, South Shields, and the late Margaret Hunter (nee Miller).

In Westoe Cemetery is a family headstone which reads:-

The S.S. Lodaner, ship number 118654, was torpedoed on the 14th April 1918, by U-Boat UB 73, commanded by Kapitänleutnant Karl Neureuther, SE of the South Arklow LV. Carrying cargo of ore from Salta Caballo via Brest to Glasgow.
