The son of Robert William and Mary Lay, of 24, Dryden St., Southwick, Sunderland.

He was the nephew of James Joshua Lay who died in 1916.

James Joseph Lay  is remembered at Southwick on S130.10 and S130.22, at Sunderland in S140.48 Part 3 page 61 and in S140.48 Part 12 page 266 and in Peter Gibson’s book.
