On Helles Memorial Turkey (including Gallipoli) is the name of 10959 Private George Heptinstall, serving with the 6th Battalion, Yorkshire Regiment who died 21/08/1915.

George Hepinstall was the eldest son of George Hepinstall, of Southwick on Wear, Riveter, and his wife, Mary Ellen (13 Brangham Street. Southwick on Wear) daughter of John Leach of Southwick.

He was born at Southwick on the 15th January 1894, educated at Southwick Board School and was employed at the Sunderland Bottle Works.

George enlisted on the 24th August 1914 and was trained at Grantham.

He was killed in action at the Dardanelles on the 21st August 1915. He was unmarried. The same day his great friend and school fellow J. C. Robinson, with whom he had been brought up, enlisted, and gone to the front, was killed at Chocolate Hill.
