In Sunderland (Mere Knolls) Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave with a private  headstone of Second Engineer John Hern, serving on H.M. Yacht Iolaire with the Mercantile Marine Reserve who died 01/01/1919.

John Hern was the son of John and Ann Isabella Hern, of 13, Roxburgh Street, Sunderland.

The headstone  reads:

In
loving memory
John Hern, Warrant Engr. R.N.R.
the dearly loved son of
John & Ann Isabella Hern,
who lost his life through the
wreck of H.M.Y. Iolaire
off Stornoway Jan. 1st 1919
aged 26 years.

Also the above
Ann Isabella Hern
who died March 9th 1931
aged 71 years.

Also the above
John Hern
who died Sept, 23rd 1931
aged 74 years.

Also Jennie
daughter of the above
who died May 6th 1947
aged 52 years.

Thomas Lamb & Hilda Hern
died in infancy April 1890

Thos. Lamb Hern
died May 9th 1897 aged 16 months.
