On Lee-On-Solent Memorial, is the name of FAA/SFX. 45 Leading Air Mechanic Joseph Watson Barker serving on H.M.S. Ark Royal with the Royal Navy who died 27/09/1941.

The son of William and Isabel Barker, of West Pelton, Co. Durham.

Joseph was born in 1918. In 1939 the family were living at 4 William Street. Father William born 1879 was a Hewer, mother Isabel was born in 1895, brother Jeremiah born April 20th 1916 was a Colliery Pony Putter and Charles Henry born July 9th 1924 was a Grocery Shop Assistant. A third brother William was born in 1922.

The Newcastle Evening Chronicle 27/09/1943 reports:-
Barker (William St. West Pelton). In loving memory of dear brother. Joseph W. lost sea though enemy action Sept. 27. 1941. Always remembered by brother Jerry and sister-in-law Lilian.

Barker (William St. West Pelton). Loving memory our dear son Joseph W. lost at sea Sept. 27 1941. Though the years may pass away. We think of you day to day. Remembered by father, mother and brothers Jerry, Charlie and Bill (R.A.F.). Aunt Sallv.
