On the Tower Hill Memorial is the name of Able Seaman John Robert Barrass, serving on S.S. Rio Dorado (London) with the Merchant Navy who died 16/03/1941.

The husband of Hannah Barrass, of Barley Mow, Chester le Street, Co. Durham.

‘SS Rio Dorado’ (4,507t) cargo ship, Tyne to Baltimore, was sunk by the German warship ‘Gneisenau’, E of Newfoundland. All thirty-nine crew were lost.
