On the Tower Hill Memorial is the name of Apprentice John Whitfield Taylor, serving on S.S. Embassage (Newcastle upon Tyne) with the Merchant Navy, who died 27/08/1941.

The son of Richard Edward and Tamar Taylor, of Whitley Bay, Northumberland.

‘EMBASSAGE’ – GRT 4954 – Built 1935; 27.8.1941; Torpedoed and sunk by German submarine U-557 (Paulsen) in the Atlantic 100 miles West of Achill Island in position 54.00N 13.00W while on a voyage from Hull to Bathurst and Pepel, with 8450 tons of general cargo including lorries and aircraft’ part of convoy OS4. The Master, 32 crew & 6 gunners lost.’
