On Tower Hill Memorial is the Commonwealth War Grave of Carpenter John George Mordey, serving on M.V. Fishpool (West Hartlepool) with the Merchant Navy who died 14/11/1940.

He was the son of John George and Grace Mordey, of Hendon, Sunderland, County Durham.

In Sunderland (Ryhope Road) Cemetery is a family headstone which reads:

In loving memory of
Jane
beloved wife of
John Thomas Eden
who died 2nd Aug. 1919
aged 45 years.

Also the above
John Thomas Eden
who died 25th Dec. 1954,
aged 82 years.

Also
 John George Mordey
lost at sea through enemy
action in S.S. Fishpool,
Nov. 1940 aged 22 years

and
Gordon Knapp
who died 25th Sept. 1948
aged 4 years and 10 mths,

beloved grandsons of the above.

Also
John William Eden
who died 24th Sept. 1987
beloved husband of
Hannah Cordelia.

Loves last gift remembrance.

On 14th November 1940 the Fishpool was sailing from the Tyne to Vancouver on her maiden voyage when she was hit by seven incendiary bombs south-west of Rockall in the North Atlantic.  The captain, 10 officers and 16 men were killed.  The ship was abandoned  and eventually towed back to the Clyde.
