On Portsmouth Naval Memorial is the name of P/SSX 19669 Able Seaman Matthew Best Finlay serving on H.M.S. Royal Oak with the Royal Navy  who died 14/10/1939.

He was the son of Thomas and Elizabeth Finlay, of Grangetown, Sunderland, County Durham.

In Sunderland (Ryhope Road) Cemetery is a family headstone which reads:

In loving memory of

died 2nd Dec. 1984
aged 91 years.

Also his dear wife
Elizabeth Finlay
died 16th Aug.1989
in her 95th year.

Matthew Finlay
beloved son
killed in action at
Scapa Flow, 14th Oct. 1939
aged 21 years.

Much loved son
Alexander Finlay
died 24th May 2003
aged 68 years.

Also his beloved wife
Norma Finlay
died 9th May 2020
aged 86 years.

Through our love we will
never be apart.
