William Newby Whincop was the son of William Shields Whincop and Eleanor Whincop, of South Shields. Residing at 10, Sunniside Drive, South Shields.

Steamer SS Thorold, ship number 146589, 1,89grt, (Quebec & Ontario Transportation Co.), had been sailing from Cardiff to London with a cargo of coal. On the 22nd August the ship was attacked and sunk by German aircraft South of the Smalls in position 51′ 41N 05′ 40W. 10 of her 24 crew killed.

William Newby Whincop is remembered at South Shields in S86.037, panel 19, at Westoe in W101.08 page 90, as Whincup, William Newby,  and on our List of Ships’ Crews.
