On Tower Hill Memorial is the name of Second Engineer Officer Joseph Laurence Armstrong serving on S.S. Iddesleigh (London) with the Merchant Navy who died 10/08/1944.

The husband of Henrietta Anne Armstrong, of Maidenhead, Berkshire.

The Hartlepool Northern Daily Mail 09/10/1944 reports with a photo:-
Mrs Armstrong, of Pudding Nook Farm, Greatham, has been informed that her husband. Second Engineer Joseph Laurence Armstrong, M.N., has lost his life sea as result of enemy action. He was the only son of Mr. J. and the late Mrs. Armstrong. After leaving Henry Smith School, Hartlepool, he was an apprentice at Messrs. Grays Central shipyard. He had been going to sea for 14 years. Just over two years ago he was married in Birmingham. He was 39.

The Lincolnshire Chronicle 30/12/1944 reports:
Merchant Navy Officer
A Merchant Navy officer who Joined the service at the age 14½ has been killed in action, when his ship was  torpedoed off the French coast.

He was Joseph Laurence Armstrong. 2nd Engineer In the Merchant Navy, and only son of Mr. J and the late Mrs. Armstrong was married to Miss Henriette Anne Truelove. of Colegrave-street Lincoln.

Mr. Armstrong was born in Co Durham, and stared work on the P and O. Liners. He was on the Rawalpindi when it was torpedoed.

Four and half months ago he came back from America to take part in the ferrying service after D Day.
