Charles Ernest Stiles Jnr was an only child. He was the son of the Chief Engineer Charles Ernest Stiles who was drowned at sea when his ship the S.S. Bestwood (Sunderland) sank in 1917 after a collision with the S.S. Leander and Rose Hannah Detchon.
Born at Sunderland, November 25th 1898, Charles Ernest Stiles Jnr (12) in 1911 was living in 5 rooms at Hastings Street, Sunderland with his mother and his cousin Rose Emma Stiles (6).
When war was declared August 4th 1914 he was 15 years of age, too young to serve but he was attested at the age of 17 years 7 months at Sunderland, June 7th 1916 and posted that same day to the Army Reserve. He was mobilised at Newcastle upon Tyne, June 29th 1918 and posted as Private 63154 to the 4th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment.
Although his regiment was at the front he did not join them and when the guns fell silent November 11th 1918 he was sent to Class Z February 26th 1919, free to return to his home at 70, Hastings Street, Sunderland and his apprenticeship as a marine engine fitter but under the obligation to return to the Colours should hostilities resume with Germany. With the signing of the Treaty of Versailles June 28th 1919 this ceased to exist and WW1 was officially brought to a close.
In 1921 Rose Hannah (46) and Charles Ernest Jnr (22) a qualified engine fitter previously employed by the North Eastern Marine were still living at the same address. To assist in the running of the household Rose Hannah had taken in two boarders, railway ticket collector Thomas Jardine (44) and clerk Bertha Charlton (21), both employed by the North Eastern Railway.
In 1926 Charles Ernest was married at Sunderland to Ada Green Hodgson, she was the daughter of boiler plater Michael Hodgson and Elizabeth Ann Cooper. By 1939 his mother Rose Hannah had moved to 1, Capulet Terrace, Sunderland. Living with her was her daughter in law Ada Green Stiles and boarder Thomas Jardine. Charles Ernest Stiles Jnr was living at 7, Hambledon Road, Middlesbrough, the home of the Cunningham family, working as a vacuum cleaner salesman. William Cunningham was the sales area manager.
Rose Hannah Stiles nee Detchon died at The General Hospital, Ryhope, County Durham, January 7th 1956. Her effects in the sum of £1490 0 shillings 3 pence were assigned to her son shopkeeper Charles Ernest and his wife Ada Green Stiles, February 6th 1956. She is at rest within Sunderland Cemetery.
Charles Ernest Stiles Jnr., died October 16th 1960 at Sunderland historically in County Durham until 1974. His widow Ada Green Stiles nee Hodgson, died February 28th 1988 at Simonised, South Shields, Tyne & Wear since 1974.
