On Tower Hill Memorial is the name of Second Engineer Officer Charles Robert Straker, M.M., serving on S.S. Chevington with the Merchant Navy who died 12th October 1941.
He was the son of John and Helen Straker and the husband of Ellen Straker of Amble. Northumberland.
The Newcastle Evening Chronicle 20/10/1941 reports:-
An Amble sea-going engineer, and holder of the Military Medal, has lost his life at sea as the result of enemy action. He is Charles R. Straker, whose home 10, Scott Street. Amble. He served in the Northumberland Fusiliers in the Great War and was awarded the Military Medal. after being reported missing. For 14 years he served on the same ship, sailing from North-East Coast ports. He leaves a widow and nine children.
238188 Private Charles Robert Straker serving with the 5th Battalion Duke of Wellington’s (West Riding) Regiment was awarded the Military Medal in WW1.
