On Portsmouth Naval Memorial is the name of P/SSX 19042 Able Seaman Harold Quinn serving on H.M.S. Royal Oak with the Royal Navy who died 14/10/1939.

The son of John and Sarah Quinn, of Newbiggin by the Sea, Northumberland.

Harold Quinn was born in late 1919 at Newbiggin by the Sea, to parents, John and Sarah Quinn. He was baptised at St. Aidan’s RC Church, Ashington in early 1920. By 1939 the Quinn family were living at 30 Collingwood Road, Newbiggin.

Harold, at this point, had already enlisted in H.M. Royal Navy, being allocated the service number P/SSX 19042.

Harold was lost at sea whilst aboard H.M.S. Royal Oak on the 14th October 1939 when it was hit by a torpedo.

Another parishioner, Sidney Taylor, was also lost on the same day, they were both aged only 19 years. Harold and Sidney are both listed on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial.

Harold Quinn is remembered at Newbiggin by the Sea on N10.04, N10.13 and N10.14  and in our List of Ships’ Crews.
