On Portsmouth Naval Memorial, is the name of P/JX 246931 Able Seaman George Miller serving on H.M.S. Fidelity with the Royal Navy who died 01/01/1943.

The son of Gertrude Miller, of Ashington, Northumberland.

Eoin Gallacher has submitted the following:-

George Miller was born in 1922, at Ashington, to parents, George Miller Sr, a veteran of the Great War and Gertrude Towart (who married at St. Aidan’s). George presumably, started work as a miner down Ashington pit, like many other young men at the time.

By 1939, he was living with his parents and siblings at 156 Pont Street, Ashington.

George enlisted in HM Royal Navy, being allocated the service number P/JX 246931, serving aboard the HMS Fidelity.

Able Seaman George Miller was lost at sea on the 1st January 1943 and is remembered on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, he was only 20 years old.

Thurtle/Thirtle Miller, George’s uncle, was killed in the Great War, whilst serving with the Royal Dublin Fusiliers.

The Newcastle Evening Chronicle 04/09/1943 reports:
MILLER, (Ashington, 156, Pont Street). Treasured memories of A.B. George R.N., 21, now presumed lost H.M.S. Fidelity, Jan.1943. Longed for always by his loving sister Gladys (A.T.S.), auntie, also Evelyn and Bob. For ever hoping.

MILLER (Ashington, 156, Pont St.) Beloved and everlasting memories of our son, A.B. George, R.N. aged 21, reported missing Jan. 1943, now presumed lost with H.M.S. Fidelity. Deeply mourned by his sorrowing mam, dad, sisters Gladys and Edna. Hope not abandoned.

George Miller is remembered at Ashington on A17.01 (A17.27) and in our List of Ships’ Crews.
