On Tower Hill Memorial is the name of Second Engineer Henry Digman serving on S.S. Elterwater (Newcastle) with the Mercantile Marine who died 16/12/1914.
Born in South Shields, he was the son of Nevison Newbegin Digman and his wife Elizabeth. He was married to Mary Jane Digman, nee Hume, of 17 Birchington Avenue, South Shields.
He was serving on SS Elterwater of 1,228 tons, which was sunk by a mine 3 miles east from Scarborough with the loss of 6 lives on the 16th December 1914. The mine struck at 6.13 p.m. and SS Elterwater sank in 3 minutes.
