On Plymouth Naval Memorial is the name of K/17640 Stoker 1st Class James Mathieson Dobie serving on H.M.S. Black Prince with the Royal Navy who died 31/05/1916.

James was born at Dumfries.

In 1911 he was at  115 Pine Street Elswick aged 19 years and a Labourer with the Railway Company. He was living with his uncle was Robert Renwick Peacock.

The NER Magazine reports his death with a photograph:
One of the brave fellows who went down on the Black Prince in the recent North Sea Battle was Stoker James Mathewson Dobie, for several years employed as a trace horse lad and rulley checker at the Forth Goods Station, Newcastle. He left the service in January 1913 to join the Navy and his untimely but glorious end at the early age of 25 years is deeply regretted by the men at the goods station where he was much respected.

James Mathieson Dobie is not remembered on a local War Memorial but is remembered on our List of Ships’ Crews.
