On the Tower Hill Memorial, London is the name of Chief Steward Henry Young Marshall serving on S.S. Anglo Indian with the Merchant Navy who died 25/08/1942.

Henry Young Marshall was born on the 29th September 1902, baptised 22nd October 1903, the third eldest of five children to  Henry Marshall, born 25t November 1873, died 1909?, and his wife Sarah nee Briggs,  (born 27th August 1874, died 9th July 1957), she was the daughter of  John and Henrietta Briggs of 68 Maxwell Street, South Shields.  They were married in 1898.

The other children were:-

• John Henry Marshall, born 7th August 1898, baptised 24th August 1898 at St Stephen’s Church, South Shields, died 1959.  He was a River Tyne Ship’s Pilot. He was awarded the Mercantile Marine Medal on the 8th October 1919 and the British Marine Medal from the Tyne Pilotage Commissioners whilst residing at 25 Pearson Street, South Shields.
• Jane Ann Harrison Marshall born May 1900.
• Doris Ramsey Marshall, born March 1905.
• William Marshall, born 31st July 1909.

The father was a Pilot’s apprentice but died about 1909.  In 1881, he was residing at 13 Green Terrace, South Shields. By the time he got married, they were residing at 35 Beacon Street, before moving to 33 Beacon Street in 1911.

Henry was educated at the Baring Street school and joined the Mercantile Marine Navy at 14 years of age, as a Mess Room Steward. He served in WW1 as a Steward and served aboard the SS Harvesthehude, ship number 143205, until the 2nd February 1920, then the SS Preussen, ship number 144525 till the 21st May 1920. Then he served on the SS Rose Marie, ship number 128498, followed by the SS Ethelwolf, ship number 115859 on the 18th October 1921.

In 1921, the family had moved to 25 Pearson Street, South Shields. By 1939 the family were residing at 52 Julian Street. William Marshall was an Electric Welder at a Shipyard, John Henry Marshall was still a Tyne Pilot.  Doris and Jane had left home by then. In 1939, John Henry Marshall was residing at  20 Trajan Street, South Shields.

In WW2 Henry was the Chief Steward onboard the SS Anglo Indian, ship number 166338, built by Short Brothers at the Pallion Yard in Sunderland.  An 11 knot four cylinder steamer launched on the 7th July 1925 for Nitrate Producers SS Co. Ltd. by Short Bros. Ltd., Sunderland. She was sold to Turnbull Scott and Co. in 1937 and renamed Baxtergate. Ten years later she was sold to Panama and renamed Artygia and the following year, 1948, gained new Panamanian owners and renamed Domina.
Her sale to Greek owners in 1955 was her last and she saw out her days as Lily Michalos before she was scrapped at Hong Kong beginning 21st August 1959.

Henry died of heart failure due to heat exhaustion at Rooha Float, Persia Gulf attributed to his war service. on the 25th August 1942.  His residence address was 50 Julian Street, South Shields.

He left effects of £356 17shillings to his mother Sarah Marshall.
