On Tower Hill Memorial is the name of Greaser Edward Occulstone serving on S.S. Lunula (Liverpool) with the Merchant Navy who died 09/04/1941.

He was married to Lilian Occulstone of Whitley Bay

In 1901 Edward was at Netherton Park Training School

The Shields Daily News 16/06/1941 reports:-
Whitley Bay Man Killed
Edward William Occulstone, a ship’s greaser, eldest son of Mrs S. Occulstone of 13 Ferry Street. Jarrow, is reported killed as a result of an explosion on his ship at sea. He was 50 years of age and was unmarried. (sic) He lived at 3 Duchess Street. Whitley Bay. He had been going to sea since a boy and in the last war joined the Navy and at the end of hostilities went back to the merchant service. A brother, Charles was lost at sea a few years ago and another brother, Joseph, is serving in the merchant navy.

There is no marriage for  Edward and Lilian, although in 1939 the couple were living together at 10 Devonshire Terrace Whitley Bay. She was named as Lilian Clare on the Register.

Edward Occulstone is remembered in the Netherton Park on N5.02,  as “Wm. Edward Occulstone” at Whitley Bay on W84.01 and in our List of Ships’ Crews.
