Every Name a Story

On Tower Hill Memorial is the name of Sailor Herbert Raymond Latimer serving on S.S. Almeda Star with the Merchant Navy who died 17/01/1941.

In Tynemouth (Preston) Cemetery is a family headstone which reads:

In loving memory of
Richard Fox Latimer
lost at sea
4th May 1941 aged 52 years

Hilda his dear wife
died 20th May 1950 aged 68 years

Herbert Raymond
their dear son
lost at sea 17th Jan 1942
aged 19 Years

The headstone states Richard Fox Latimer died 4th May 1941 and Herbert Raymond Latimer died 17th January 1942. However a Roll of Honour entry in the Shields Daily News 12/06/1942 gives May 1942 for Richard and January 1941 for Raymond (as does CWGC). It also adds late of 6 Chirton West View North Shields.

Neither name appears on any local memorial.
