On Portsmouth Naval Memorial is the name of P/KX 78919 Petty Officer Stoker Robert Gilmour Wilson serving on H.M.S. Marne with the Royal Navy who died 25/08/1942.

The son of Samuel and Martha Wilson and the husband of Hannah Wilson of Pelton Co Durham.

Robert was born September 20th 1909 at Dundonald Irvine Ayrshire. By 1911 the family were at 52 Orchard Street Pelton.

In 1927 Robert joined the Royal Navy. In 1937 he married Hannah Dinning.

In 1939 Hannah born April 10th 1912 was living at 64 Hylton Terrace Pelton with her parents John and Margaret Dinning. Their daughter Margaret had been born in 1938.

The Newcastle Evening Chronicle 18/09/1942 reports with a photograph:-
Petty Officer Robert G Wilson husband of Mrs Hannah Wilson of 64 Hylton Terrace Pelton is officially reported to have been killed on active service. He has three brothers at sea

His brother William born 1920 was also killed in WW2.

The Newcastle Evening Chronicle 25/08/1944 reports:-
Wilson (Pelton). In loving memory of Bob. P.O. R.N., killed on active service. Aug. 25. 1942. Always remembered by Ettie and John.

Wilson (Pelton). In loving memory of my dear brother Robert, killed by enemy action. Aug 25. 1942. Always remembered by his sister Lizzie and brother-in-law Ken. PO.W.

Wilson (64. Hylton Tce. Pelton). In loving memory of my dear husband Robert G. Wilson, S.P.0., Navy killed by enemy action. Aug. 25th 1942. Will always remembered by his wife and daughter. Worthy of everlasting remembrance.
