A TOWN is to pay its last respects to a young hero of the sea. A memorial service is to be held for young rating Stephen White aged 21 at his local church Glebe Methodist in Washington. The Leading Marine Engineering Mechanic from Beech Square, Columbia, Washington, was listed missing presumed dead after the sinking of HMS Ardent.
He joined the Navy three years ago to follow younger brother, 20-year old Ian, who is at present at the Portsmouth land base, HMS Sultan
Methodist Minister Rev Donald Frith said yesterday that he expected the church to overflowing for the 40-minute service at 11am on Saturday.
Stephen was a very likeable lad, an extrovert who was well known in the village he said.
I felt we has to mark this tragic loss with some kind of service, and the response from local people has been overwhelming.
Former minister at the church, the Rev. Kingsley Johnson is to speak about Stephen at the service which is to be conducted by Mr Frith.

The decision has delighted Stephen’s mother, Brenda, who is moving away from the new town this weekend. She said: “It is nice to be able to have something for Steve left in Washington. I think it is something he would have liked. He was a very active sort of person.”
The cup inscribed with Stephen’s name will be the annual prize in a Competition for Washington schools.
It was the idea of Mr. Doug Lawrence who runs the table tennis club.
Tomorrow Mrs. White, 45 of Beech Square, Colombia, Washington and her daughter Mandy, 13, move to a new home in Stanhope, Weardale.
Since the tragedy Mrs White has been helped by members of Washington CB Breakers Club. On Sunday Mandy will take part in a charity walk organised by the Breakers.
