On Chatham Naval Memorial is the name of  K/11032 Stoker Walter George Sinton serving on HMTB No. 11 with the Royal Navy who died 07/03/1916.

The son of Mr. and Mrs. George Sinton, of 17, Laburnum Avenue, Wallsend on Tyne. He was a native of Berwick upon Tweed.

Walter was born on 10th June 1891 in Berwick upon Tweed the son of George Sinton, a butcher and his wife Margaret.  The family lived in West End, Tweedmouth.

Over the next twenty years the family continued to grow until, in 1911, it consisted of George and Margaret, two sons and three daughters living at 72, Castlegate, Berwick upon Tweed. Walter was employed as a locomotive cleaner.

On 25th April 1911 Walter enlisted in the Royal Navy for 12 years service when he was described as being 5ft 6¼ inches tall with dark brown hair, grey eyes and a fresh complexion.

After service, mainly on small craft, Walter was lost in the North Sea on 7th March 1916 while serving on HMTB 11. She was patrolling with HMS Coquette and when that vessel struck a mine HMTB 11 closed to help and also struck a mine and sank with the loss of 34 hands.

When the pensions, payments etc. were sorted out George and Margaret were living at 17, Laburnum Avenue, Wallsend on Tyne.

Walter Sinton is remembered at Berwick upon Tweed on B25.01, B25.08, and B25.19,  at Tweedmouth on as “W.G. Sinton” on T31.01 and n our List of Ships’ Crews.
