a. Unveiled 21st October 1921 by Major Dorman. Dedicated by Rev. H.P. Boase.

Memorial Description

Obelisk on square base and granite step, 12 feet total height, with four further stone steps, bottom step being 8 feet square. Surrounded by a narrow flower bed and low iron railings. Names are in a single column on the left side and back, the dedication is on the front. A pink marble slab has been fixed to the front of the bottom two risers which carry the dedication and names from 1939-45. Lettering is incised and blackened using sans serif capitals.

Ownership and maintenance

The War Memorial was formally handed over to the Parish Council at a Remembrance Day ceremony held on 11th November 1922.

Notes

1. John Hunter, one of two of that name on the memorial, was in the Machine Gun Corps, and is buried near Cambrai, Northern France. There was also a stone plaque placed in the Methodist Chapel at Shotton Colliery , now demolished. The plaque has now been resited at the Methodist Church. See S125.10. (Letter from William Chalder Wood, great nephew)

2. This memorial appears to have been unveiled in 1921 but not handed over to the Parish Council until the following year.

Durham Chronicle 17/11/1922 reports the service at which the memorial was handed over.
