Memorial Description

Cross on large square block standing on a raised stone plinth, overall height 7m. and approx. 2m square. Four stone pillars support a stone tiled pitched roof which covers the monument.
A cobbled path (now cemented over) originally encircled the monument. The approach is by five stone steps leading up from the roadside.
The dedication is on a plaque 3 feet high x 3 feet wide at the front. The lettering is incised using Roman capitals.
The names of those who served are on the sides and back.

Sculptor, Artist or Designer

Designed by Mr. Weightman (Architect); built by Messrs. Muckle of Rothbury; Lettering done by Walter Wilson, Cemetery Road, Gateshead.

Notes

1. Originally there was a cobbled path round the monument, but this has been cemented.

2. The cost was also given as £340.18s plus £25 architect’s fee.

Northumberland Record Office Draft Order of service for unveiling on December 21st; letter from Walter James to Rev. Stephens shows £360 had been raised, and the idea of a village hall had been suggested. (NRO EP.97/23)

In private hands original letters re fees etc, which he inherited from Mr. J. Amos, Hon. Sec. Rochester War Memorial Committee.
