Notes

1. South African emblems around the base were removed for political reasons. They are now missing.

2. At one time, before restoration, this was popularly known as “The Mucky Angel”.

3. Northumberland sent the only two regular battalions of the Northumberland Fusiliers, some squadrons of the Imperial Yeomanry; Elswick Battery of Artillery Volunteers; a Voluntary Service Company, and sections of 1st Newcastle Volunteer Royal Engineers.

4. A competition for the design attracted 41 entries.

5. The site chosen was a cab shelter at Barras Bridge, overlooking the town moor.

6. “On the summit of the tapering column stands an imposing ten foot figure of a winged Victory; her left hand rests on her sword, while in the other she holds the victor’s wreath. In touching contrast with her dignity and impassiveness is the tenderness expressed in the beautifully modelled figure at the base, which represents a draped female form holding a palm branch, representing Northumbria paying her tribute to her fallen sons, though it might equally well be said to portray “Sorrow mourning her loss”. : St.George’s Gazette.

7. The obelisk and base were constructed of stone provided by Lord Armstrong from his quarries at Cragside, near Rothbury, in Northumberland.
