Unveiled 8th September 2001 by Brig. Robin McGregor-Oakford, MC, accompanied by Capt. Richard Annand, then the sole surviving DLI VC winner.

Memorial Description

“Celebration Stone” 4 feet [1.21m] high x 5 feet [1.52m] wide x 2 feet 8 [812mm] inches deep. A plaque 3 feet [914mm] high x 3 feet 6 inches [1.06m] wide carries the names. A glass bubble has been set in top right and left corners, one bearing a replica of the Victoria Cross and the other a replica of the DLI badge. Lettering is incised and gilded using serif upper and lower case lettering.

Notes

1. Richard Annand died 24 December 2004.

2. The medals belonging to Pte. Michael Heaviside, V.C. were handed over to the DLI Regimental Museum whilst it was at Brancepeth Castle. They were added to a display of medals already in the Museum. They are now in the Durham Light Infantry Medal Room at Palace Green.

3. There is a subscription Roll buried under this Memorial.

4. April 2018 the stone has been re-located to the Palace Green, outside of the Durham University Palace Green Library.

5. Was the time capsule with the scroll moved at the same time?
