Memorial Description

Pieta. It rests on a wood plinth, which bears the dedication on the front. Behind it is a shrine, with the names of the fallen listed in a single column on each side on a panel.
(The War Memorial which is about half way down the Chapel on the north side, is a very handsome shrine executed in oak. The base is a form of casket and placed on this is a statue representing the Virgin Mary supporting the spear marked body of Christ. The expression of the features bears out the beautiful theme of the mother of sorrow weeping over her son, a theme at once synonymous with those who have lost friends and relatives in the war. behind the figures is a large panel tapering to form a portico at the top. On the wooden panel at each side of the figures of Christ and the Virgin are the names of those who fell in the war.)

Notes

1. The initials “A.M.D.G.” are short for the Latin for “To the greater glory of God”.

2. The Pieta no longer exists, but behind in the picture are two flanking panels bearing names. Is it possible that these panels were remade into the plaque now at the back of the church? See B25.31 by following the link below.
