In Annitsford (St. John) Roman Catholic Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave with a private headstone of Lieutenant William Henry Segrave, serving with the Royal Flying Corps who died 12/02/1917.

The son of Major O’Neal Segrave, D.S.O. and Beatrice Segrave, of Kiltyneon, Newtown, Mount Kennedy, Co. Wicklow.

The family headstone reads:

In
loving memory
of
Lieut. W.H. Segrave R.A.F.
who lost his life on 12th Feby. 1917.
Aged 31 years.
R.I.P.

The Gloucester Journal 17/02/1917 reports:
Lieut. W. H. Segrave, Royal Flying Corps, made a false [sic – forced?] landing at Chesterfield on Monday afternoon owing to engine trouble, his biplane coming into contact with a tree top. He was killed instantaneously.

He was flying BE2c 7229 of 63 Squadron, according to the Casualty Card held at the R.A.F. Museum.

William Henry Segrave is not remembered on any local War Memorial.
