On the Portsmouth Naval Memorial is the name of P/LX 23741 Steward Alexander Gay Smith, serving on H.M.S. Hood with the Royal Navy, who died 24/05/1941.

Alexander Gay Smith was born at 5 Hutton Avenue, West Hartlepool, on the 5th February 1919, the son of Mr and Mrs S. W. Smith.

Alexander was an old boy of Galley’s School and he volunteered for the Royal Navy in July 1939. He was employed by his father as a Fish Retailer of Lowthian Road.

Note his middle name in the newspaper article is given as Gill.

Alexander Gay Smith is remembered at West Hartlepool on W111.055, in the 1939-1945 Military and Civilian names beginning with S and in our List of Ships’ Crews.
