William Gordon Avery, Adjutant in the Salvation Army who died 16/12/1914.

The following report appeared in the Gainsborough News, Lincolnshire, 25/12/1914:
A memorial service was held at the Salvation Army Barracks on Sunday night in consequence of the death of Adjutant Avery, by shells hurled by the Germans in Hartlepool. The Band played the Dead March from Saul from the Market Place to the Barracks. Adjutant Avery was for some years stationed at Gainsborough.

The Newcastle Journal 17/12/1914 carried a brief mention as follows:-
Adjutant Avery, of the Salvation Army, was killed, his house being completely wrecked.

The Newcastle Daily Chronicle 17/12/1914 reports:-
During the bombardment Adjutant William Avery of the Salvation Army, whose quarters were situate within a stone’s throw of the East Front, was killed.  Deceased, who was 49 years of age, was a Cornishman, and he entered the Salvation Army from Mevagissey 26 years ago He leaves five children.

Sunderland Daily Echo and Shipping Gazette 18/12/1914 carried another brief entry:
Thomas Ray identified William Gordon Avery as the Salvation Army adjutant commanding the Hartlepool Corps. He lived at 7 Victoria Place at Hartlepool, and his house was pretty well blown in from the front. The adjutant evidently had just got of bed.

William Gordon Avery is remembered at Hartlepool on H115.09 and at West Hartlepool on W111.077.
