Memorial Description

Plaque of three panels set in a frame of dark wood. The frame carries a laurel spray raised in half relief at centre top, a Tudor rose in the top right hand corner and a thistle in the bottom right hand corner, what could be a shamrock in the bottom left hand corner, leaving one to speculate whether there was a daffodil or leek in the top left hand corner. In the photo, there seems to be a small panel attached to the bottom frame, but this cannot be read. The dedication is carried over all three panels, painted in gold lettering with black outlines. The names are hand painted in a single column on each of the three panels

Notes

1. In 1990 the enormous building was converted for use as part of the Technical College. The memorial was moved with the school to new premises at the corner of Elwick Road and Eldon Grove. It is tucked away at the end of a room under the eaves.

2. The unveiling should have been carried out by Col. Robson but he was unwell.

3. It was the intention of the council after the Great War to put up a memorial tablet in each of the Borough’s Schools. Very few have survived, but it seems there was a ‘standard issue’, this one being very similar in design to Jesmond Road.
