Dedication, Creation or Publication date

a. Unveiled 13th November 1921 by the Duke of Northumberland. Dedicated by Rev. Canon Blackett Ord, Archdeacon of Northumberland.

Memorial Description

Reredos of six wood panels, three on each side of the altar. The dedication runs along the top of each column, using Gothic lettering incised and painted gold, and separated from the names by a wavy line of leaves. This motif is also used to divide the 1939-45 names from those of 1914-18. The names are incised in sans serif capitals and painted gold in a single column on each panel.

Carved by James Middlemiss, a church sidesman, one of the first Shilbottle men to go to war.

1. At the unveiling “The Vicar read the names of Euan Sanderson and Philip Sanderson (Eastfield Hall, Warkworth) as worshippers in the church whose names were recorded in their own church”.
