This was described in a press report as “Stanley Hill Top war memorial”. At the junction of B6298 from Billy Row to Tow Law.

Memorial Description

Statue depicting “Sorrow” holding a laurel wreath.. The quotations are carried on the lower pedestals. Names are listed on slightly raised panels on the pedestal, in two columns according to regiments, those for 1914-18 on the front and those for 1939-45 on the back, below the relevant dates, using Roman capitals throughout.

“Granite pedestal and statue. Ashlar curb and piers, wrought iron railings. Seated life size figure of a woman in classic drapery in a dejected posture, right hand holding a wreath, on a tall square pediment with a wide base, swag-decorated frieze and wide cornice. Names on the pedestal. Wrought iron rail in four short posts on the step. Curb has pyramid-coped low piers on each side; centre of each block has raised rusticated panel. Enclosure of plain railings and gate with flattened painted heads and square principals with pointed heads”. (Listed building description).

1. The 1939-45 unveiling took place on the same day as that at Billy Row using the same Order of Service.

2. The lady who died in 1914-18 was Miss Ethel Winship, who lost her life in a munitions factory in Newcastle.
