Memorial Description

Soldier statue on tall pedestal which rests on a base on two steps. Total height is 16 feet (4.87m). This is set in a small garden with a hedge around. The soldier is standing with his rifle held lightly in one hand.
The dedication for 1914-18 is carried on the front of the main pedestal, with the names in two columns on each side. The dedication for 1939-45 is on the front of the base, with the names listed in three columns. The lettering is in sans serif capitals throughout.

Materials used

Grey marble resting on granite. Bases are of Heworth stone.

Notes

1. The bayonet was snapped off by vandals in 1950. The memorial was removed to the Park as a security measure. By 1974 the bayonet had become a target for stone throwers. A metal one was made which was painted grey to match the stonework. It is secured to the statue only during Armistice Week and kept in a storeroom during the rest of the year. An unidentified newspaper article tells the story.

2. A black and white movie film was made of the dedication in 1922
