Unveiled 23rd October 1920 by Lieut.Col. Simpson of Blaydon; dedicated by Rev. T.W. Hanson.

Memorial Description

Plaque. At centre top is a panel with an angel on either side raised in half relief. In the centre is a wreath containing the words “Roll of Honour”, below which is the name of the Institute and the dedication.
Below this, the main panel is outlined with a raised border of leaves. The names are listed in four columns. Lettering is in Roman capitals throughout.

How money was raised

Employees. Col. F.R. Simpson gave £25 from the Coal Co. and £5 personally. The Institute Committee made up the balance.

Present condition

Destroyed when the Institute burnt down on May 18th 1930

Mr. Lynn Miller, crafts teacher at Crookhill School.

Notes

1. " . . . the late Mr. J. Maughan wrote to the Blaydon Courier that he had copied the following from an existing photograph". This gives a transcript of the inscription and list of names.

2. Addison Colliery War Relief Fund held an “in remembrance” gathering where tea was served, and money handed out. In June 1919 16 widows received £2 each, each of 31 children received 10s; a totally disabled young men was given £5. The Committee “hold the opinion that the best war memorial is to help those left behind”.

3. £10 was handed over from the Welcome Home Committee.

4. From the colliery, over 400 men had served, of whom 59 were killed.

	The Illustrated Chronicle 25/10/1920 has two "A. Purvis" 
and have given these as Albert Purvis and Arthur Purvis.
