Original Location

On north side of the road from Haverton Hill to Port Clarence at its junction with West Street, about four miles east of Stockton.

Dedication, Creation or Publication date

a. Unveiled 14th October 1922 by Sir Hugh Bell, Bart. , C.B. (Lord Lieutenant of North Riding of Yorkshire) and Lady Bell, D.B.E.; dedicated by the Bishop of Durham.
b. 1957

Memorial Description

Obelisk 20 feet high on square stone base with four steps, on a square site enclosed by a wrought iron gate. At the base front face of the obelisk is a wreath carved in half relief. The names and dedication are carried on bronze plates attached to the front of the main base, the names listed in three columns.
On the riser of the step below is a small shield bearing the names of six more under the heading “Addenda”.
The dedication and names for 1939-45 are on the right hand side, the names listed in two columns.

Ownership and maintenance

The memorial was formally handed over to Billingham Parish Council at the unveiling ceremony.

Notes

1. Two sides of the fence disappeared possibly for scrap in 1939-45.

2. Nearby terraces were demolished in the 1960s giving a more open outlook.

3. The front fence was demolished by a lorry in 1988, following which the railings were entirely replaced and the whole monument cleaned.

4. From the district, 600 went to serve, of whom 88 died.
