Unveiled 2nd August 1922 by Lord Joicey; dedicated by the Bishop of Durham.

Memorial Description

West window, of three divisions of two lights each. Each set of two depicts a scene which is carried across both lights. They depict left the call of Matthew; centre The Transfiguration; right The raising of the widow’s son. At the foot of all six lights is an angel carrying a scroll. The dedication is carried along the bottom of all six lights.

Underneath it is a plaque 4 ft 6 ins wide x 22 inches high mounted on an oak frame.

To the glory / of God and in / Memory of the / Men whose names / are recorded on / the tablet below.
On the plaque:
A tribute of honour and regard to all the men from the parish of Newbottle who gave their lives in the Great War 1914-1919.

Who commissioned

Public subscription and fund raising. A former vicar sent £5; Lord Joicey gave £50.

Cost

Estimated at £600.

Sculptor, Artist or Designer

Plaque made by Messrs. Thew of Newcastle, mounted on a frame made by Messrs. Slack of Newbottle. Stained glass window is by Atkinson of Newcastle.

Notes

1. Of a population of 6,000, 10% had “played their part”.

2. The peace celebrations had supplied surplus funds which were spent on entertaining the returned troops at a special evening organised by the Parish Council.
