Memorial Description

Plaque 2 feet 6 inches high x 2 feet wide (762 mm x 609 mm), with arch at centre top, set in a recess specially built for it. On the plaque, there is a border of two parallel lines culminating in a fleur-de-lys in each corner. The name "Netherton" curves to follow the shape of the dome. The names are listed in three columns, those who were killed being above those who served. The dedication and the names of the dead are in Roman capitals, those who served are in sans serif capitals.

a. Edward H. Thew, Newcastle on Tyne.
a. Designed by John Gutherson of Thropton (a partner of Messrs. Geo. Nichol & Co. who built the hall).

Notes

1. It was originally intended to open the hall and unveil the tablet on Good Friday, 1921, but Lord and Lady Armstrong were on holiday and no suitable replacement could be found. They waited for Lord and Lady Armstrong to return.

2. The tea at the ceremony for unveiling the 1939-45 plaque was provided by the Graham family, relatives of one of the men.

3. Jim Scott, named in 1939-45, died while a POW in Japan and is buried there.
