Notes

1. From the layout of the plaque, it seems possible that there were sufficient spaces on the original plaque to be able to add the names from 1939-45. It is suggested that:
(a) the dates “1914-1918” were inserted between the dedication and the 1914-18 list;
(b) the dates “1939-1945” and the two names were inserted between the 1914-18 list and the details at the bottom.

Morpeth Herald 28/05/1920, reporting on a meeting of the Newbiggin War Memorial Committee, reports a man saying that he had served on the Committee of the Newbiggin Co-operative Society which had already raised £400 towards a memorial by weekly collections; 04/06/1920 reports pending unveiling ceremony; 18/06/1920 reports unveiling ceremony.

Alnwick & County Gazette 19/06/1920 carries brief report of unveiling.

Newcastle Weekly Chronicle 05/06/1920 reports proposed unveiling.

Ashington Library has a photograph of the Co-op (but not the memorial) before its closure.
