Memorial Description

Cross of Celtic design on plinth approx. 6 feet high. The cross has a red poppy at the centre. The main front panel of the plinth has been smoothed to bear the names. These are listed in two columns, those for 1914-18 on the left, those for 1939 and the Gulf 1991 on the right, divided by a vertical line. The smooth face of the step bears the quotation.
Lettering is in elongated Roman lower case.
The base on which the cross stands is rough hewn from the opencast mine at Old Ravensworth as a reminder of the colliery heritage.

Notes

1. The original design was to be of three panels, the centre one bearing the dedication, the left panel the names from 1914-18 and the right from 1939-45. This was revised.

2. The memorial is based on one erected on Sword Beach, Normandy, modified to suit local requirements.

3. The Millennium Community Centre was once the school. Posters say “Back in the old schoolyard. Where they played as youngsters the memory of their sacrifice will be enshrined for future generations” and alternatively “Where they all played together as children . . . the village heroes will now honoured and remembered by future generations”.

4. The name of Sapper L. Potts was added at a ceremony on 25th February 2007. He was born in Kibblesworth and killed on the Somme on July 31st 1916, aged 27, serving with 174th Tunnelling Regiment of the Royal Engineers.
