Memorial Description

Pair of semi-detached cottages of brick and slate. There is a plaque 1 foot 3 inches high x 2 feet wide bearing the dedication. Two other plaques each 2 feet 10 inches high x 2 feet 3 inches wide bear the names in two columns on each, incised and blackened.

Built by A. Metcalf and Sons of Shildon.

Notes

1. The extended gable ends at the front have been boxed in by glass to make a joint front porch. The walls have been whitewashed.

2. The cottages were originally “for disabled soldiers which, after having served this purpose, would become homes for aged miners.”

3. Lord Gainford was presented with a silver casket as a memento of the occasion.

4. The memorial cross was unveiled prior to the opening of these cottages.
