Present condition

Restored 1988, with the replacement of crumbling stonework and removal of graffitti at a cost of £1,800.

Ownership and maintenance

The rector proposed that the Parish Council assume responsibility for the memorial in a letter dated 19th December 1939 in the Durham Record Office EP/Eg. 154

Notes

1. There has been no newspaper report of any unveiling discovered so far.

2. In 1988, a newspaper reports how vandals sawed through a wooden seat and ripped up metal barriers 24 hours after Council workmen had cemented them into the ground.

3. When restoration work was done in 1988, for some reason the lettering was omitted.

4. The placing of the memorial was decided as being near the church but not too near that non-Protestants could object.

5. In 2005 there were plans to create a war memorial garden the war memorial.
